About this wine
Character
An austerely structured Brunello from the 2019 vintage. The nose brings together dark cherry, leather and dried Mediterranean herbs, underpinned by an earthy spiciness. A wine built for long ageing, without embellishment.
Terroir and origin
Col d'Orcia is located near Sant'Angelo in Colle in the UNESCO World Heritage Val d'Orcia. The Orcia river marks the south-western boundary of the Brunello zone. The estate comprises 530 hectares, half of it woodland, along with olive groves with trees 400 years old and 142 hectares of vineyards, 108 of them dedicated to Brunello. Sheep and goats graze between the rows, and compost from the estate's own cycle nourishes the soils.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Sangiovese, vinified dry, 14.5% vol. Ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak casks, as is customary at the estate for Brunello. Santiago Marone Cinzano, back at the helm since 2017, created this wine as LOT.1 and gave it the dynastic name Conti Marone Cinzano, tracing back to the vermouth house founded in Turin in 1757.
On the palate
Dense and powerful, with fine-grained, gripping tannin. The lively acidity keeps the body upright and the wine fresh, while juicy dark fruit remains perceptible through to the finish.
Food pairings
With braised beef, bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar goulash with juniper, and aged Pecorino Toscano.
Special features
Since 2010, Col d'Orcia has been Tuscany's largest certified organic estate. The Slow Wine Guide awarded the estate its SNAIL Award in 2023, and Wine Enthusiast named it Environmental Advocate of the Year in 2025. The Marone Cinzano family, now in its second and third generation, has run the estate since acquiring it in 1973.
