About this wine

Character

A young, tautly structured red wine that holds back its fruit to let spice, chalk and cold smoke come forward. Earthy, cool and clear, with a palpable tension between acidity and fine-grained tannin. Open it now and give it plenty of air; it will equally reward a few years in the cellar.

Terroir and origin

From Baños de Ebro, brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel Blanco farm 30 hectares across 72 plots in Rioja Alavesa, at altitudes between 550 and 720 metres. The soils are a patchwork of limestone, sandstone and gravel, and the cool nights of these high plateaus preserve freshness and precision in the wine. The Finca de los Locos is regarded at the estate as a legendary vineyard.

Grape variety and vinification

Tempranillo and Graciano form the base, joined by the white variety Viura. Grapes are hand-harvested from organically farmed plots, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, partly as whole clusters. Ageing takes place at the estate, predominantly in 600-litre barrels and for short periods, so the wood gives the wine room rather than shaping it.

On the palate

The first sip is dense and dark; the wine builds in intensity before brightening. Austere notes, fine-grained tannin and taut acidity carry it, alongside roasted nuts and black and green olive. The ethereal spice lends clarity, the fruit stays active in the background, and the finish is cool and smoky.

Highlights

The vineyard's name goes back to the grandfather who, in the 1950s, bought a fallow plot of land at high altitude and was called «El Loco» for it. What once looked like folly pays off today. Artuke belongs to the Rioja & Roll movement and the Futuro Vinador collective, and classifies its wines by origin rather than by ageing time.
