About this wine

Character

A dense, serious Barbera that brings the variety's juicy fruit together with structure and length. A fresh vein of acidity keeps the wine lively despite its 15.5% ABV, while the texture remains velvety.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the Scarrone cru near Castiglione Falletto, the medieval village at 350 metres above sea level where Carlo Vietti founded the estate in 1873. The calcareous, marl-rich soils of the Barolo zone give the wine its drive and sense of place. Today Vietti farms 75 hectares across the best crus of the Langhe.

Grape variety and vinification

A single-varietal Barbera from historic vines, as indicated by the Vigna Vecchia designation. The old vines yield small, concentrated berries; the ageing process brings out the structure without masking the variety's characteristic acidity. The wine is dry, at 15.5% ABV.

On the palate

Intense and deep: ripe dark forest berries and morello cherries, underscored by fine spice notes and a hint of undergrowth. The fine-grained tannins carry a long, clearly defined finish.

Food pairings

A wine for hearty Piedmontese cuisine: Brasato al Barolo, braised beef, wild boar goulash, tajarin with porcini mushrooms, or aged Castelmagno.

Highlights

At Vietti, Alfredo Currado began vinifying individual vineyards separately in 1961 and rescued Arneis from disappearance in 1967. Since 1974, artists have designed the labels, including Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 2025, Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
