About this wine

Character

The Barbera d'Asti DOCG "La Crena" 2022 by Vietti comes from a single south-facing vineyard in the heart of the Asti area and shows a cool, dark reading of the variety. The nose brings together dark berries with rosemary and thyme, alongside fine dark chocolate and freshly ground white pepper, carried by mineral depth.

Terroir and origin

The La Crena vineyard is located in Agliano Terme, not far from Nizza Monferrato. The vineyard covers around eight hectares, faces south, and the soil consists of calcareous marl. The oldest part of the vines was planted in 1932 and has stood in this parcel for over ninety years.

Grape variety and vinification

Made entirely from Barbera. Vietti has worked out of Castiglione Falletto since 1873 and today holds 75 hectares across the Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera, Cerequio, Monvigliero and Villero vineyards. The practice of vinifying grapes from individual vineyards separately goes back to Alfredo Currado, who began it in 1961; La Crena continues this line.

On the palate

The dark berry fruit meets a fine, lively acidity and a still-youthful tannin. Add to that a stony, cool edge, as though the wine had flowed over dark rock. The 15.0% ABV never becomes noticeable. Very good ageing potential.

Special features

Since 1974, Vietti's bottles have carried original works by artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 2025 the estate was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine.
