About this wine

Character

This Riserva reveals Sangiovese at its most austere: dark cherry, leather and Mediterranean herbs over a tannic structure built to last for decades. A wine for the patient, whose full stature only emerges with bottle age.

Terroir and origin

The Poggio al Vento vineyard, the windswept hill, lies in the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Count Alberto Marone Cinzano bought the Sant'Angelo in Colle estate in 1973 and named it after the Orcia, the river that marks the south-western boundary of the Brunello zone. Today Francesco and Santiago Marone Cinzano run the estate: 142 hectares under vine, 108 of them planted with Brunello, within a total area of 530 hectares, half of which is forest, along with olive groves containing 400-year-old trees.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Sangiovese, the grape of Montalcino. Ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak casks, which support acidity and tannin without imposing oak aromas. Col d'Orcia bottles the Poggio al Vento, the estate's flagship wine, only in outstanding vintages; 2015 was one of them. 15.0% ABV, dry.

On the palate

Dense and powerful, with pronounced tannin and juicy acidity. Dark cherry and leather linger long, the finish is spicy.

Food pairings

Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù with tagliatelle, or aged pecorino. The double magnum is best decanted and shared in good company.

Special features

Col d'Orcia has farmed organically since 2010: sheep and goats graze between the vine rows, and compost from its own cycle nourishes the soil. Wine Enthusiast honoured the estate as Environmental Advocate of the Year in 2025, and the Slow Wine Guide awarded it the SNAIL Award in 2023.
