About this wine

Character

The Ahrweiler Spätburgunder 2023 is one of three village wines from Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes. At 11.0 % vol. it stays slender and light-footed, yet despite its freshness and clear structure it already feels round, even faintly sensual. Picked early, not chaptalised: precision over power.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from Ahrweiler vineyard sites with vines averaging around 25 years of age. The subsoil of greywacke, quartzite and loess loam gives the wine its stony, taut pull. The estate farms around four hectares of steep slopes, some parcels reaching gradients of up to 70 percent, worked entirely by hand and fully organic since 2020. Yields run between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Spätburgunder, dry. The fruit is meticulously sorted, fermented spontaneously in open stainless-steel tanks, and aged with a pronounced reductive style in used barriques and half-barriques over two winters. There is no chaptalisation and no fining, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. The only addition is a minimal amount of sulphur before bottling.

On the palate

Transparent garnet red in the glass. The nose still carries a trace of matchstick, beneath which sit forest berries, cherries and pomegranate juice, warmed herbs, warm farmhouse bread, stone and undergrowth. Then juicy dark fruit recalling blackberries, sloes and cherries, joined by smoke, rustic notes, spice and mineral touches. Fresh acidity, fine-grained, well-integrated tannins, lovely length.

Distinctive features

Julia Bertram, a former German Wine Queen, and Benedikt Baltes, a winegrower's son from Dernau, bottled their first vintage in 2014; the «Discovery of the Year» award followed immediately. All vineyard sites are tended according to organic and biodynamic principles as well as those of permaculture. The barrels come exclusively from German coopers using Franconian oak.
