About this wine
Character
A dry Pinot Noir at 11.5% ABV that brings together lightness and concentration. Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes harvest early and do not chaptalize, and it is precisely from this that the wine draws its vibrant, silky character.
Terroir and origin
The Rosenthal site lies in Ahrweiler, on the steep slopes of the Ahr valley, which demand entirely manual labour; some parcels drop away at gradients of up to 70 percent. Weathered slate soils store the day's warmth, while the cool nights of the Ahr valley preserve freshness. The estate farms around 4 hectares, with yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, known as Spätburgunder on the Ahr. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously in casks of local oak; the casks come exclusively from German coopers working Franconian oak. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
On the palate
On the nose, cassis, wild raspberry, wild herbs, tree bark and cocoa; with air, cool, mineral notes and a floral fragrance emerge. Then sweet fruit, polished tannin and a cool minerality that carries the wine rather than weighing it down. Very good aging potential. Best served lightly chilled and decanted.
Food pairings
Grilled lobster with shellfish sauce and wild rice cake, rabbit pot-au-feu with truffle and potato gratin, or fresh goat cheese with cassis jelly and crusty baguette. Fine, multi-layered cuisine, in other words.
Special features
Benedikt Baltes is the son of a winemaking family from Dernau, fifth generation, and Julia Bertram was German Wine Queen. They bottled their first vintage in 2014, and the "Discovery of the Year" award followed immediately. The estate has worked entirely organically since 2020. The 2021 Ahr flood hit Dernau with full force, flooding cellars and sweeping away casks; the rebuild succeeded without compromising on quality.
