About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that draws its stature from something other than alcohol: 11.5% Vol., dry, yet with real depth and concentration. In the glass, deep cherry red with ruby highlights toward the rim. When young, the savoury character leads, with the fruit only emerging once exposed to oxygen. A wine with real potential that demands patience.
Terroir and origin
The Hardtberg lies in Dernau on the Ahr. Weathered slate soils store the day's warmth, while cool nights rolling in from the valley preserve freshness. The steep slopes call for entirely manual work, with some parcels reaching gradients of up to 70 percent. Bertram-Baltes farms around four hectares, fully organic since 2020, with yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented in local oak barrels made exclusively by German coopers from Franconian oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with no chaptalisation. Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes harvest earlier, which is why their Pinot Noirs achieve a natural 11 to 12 percent alcohol.
On the palate
Umami leads here too: meat broth and soy sauce define its youth. This is followed by juicy fruit from plum, blackberry and dark cherry. Very good ageing potential. Serve lightly chilled, decant with sufficient time ahead, and drink from Burgundy glasses.
Food pairings
Crispy roast pork with plum sauce and mashed potatoes, wok-fried prawns with glass noodles and soy sauce, or grilled pointed cabbage with roasted buckwheat and vineyard peaches. Grilled and braised dishes are the real winners here.
Special features
Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes bottled their first vintage in 2014; he comes from the fifth generation of a winemaking family in Dernau. The 2021 Ahr flood hit Dernau with full force, flooding the cellar and sweeping away barrels; with support from fellow winemakers and wine lovers, the two rebuilt the winery.
