About this wine
Character
The Dernauer Pfarrwingert 2022 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes that gets by on 11.5 % ABV, drawing its depth from juiciness and fruit rather than alcohol. Dry, rich in finesse, with plenty of play and vitality.
Terroir and origin
The Pfarrwingert site lies in Dernau on the Ahr. Weathered slate soils store the warmth of the day, while the cool nights of the Ahr valley preserve the wine's freshness. The winery farms around 4 hectares of steep slopes, some parcels reaching up to 70 percent incline, fully organic since 2020. Yields run between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, hand-picked and early enough to reach a natural 11.5 % ABV. Spontaneous fermentation in local oak barrels, sourced exclusively from German coopers working Franconian oak. No chaptalisation, no fining, bottled unfiltered.
On the palate
The sweet red fruit from the nose returns, carried by plenty of juice and a supple structure. Raspberry, sour cherry and pomegranate remain clearly defined, underpinned by fine minerality and a delicate smokiness. Serve lightly chilled and decanted.
Food recommendations
A counterpoint to rich cooking: pan-fried veal liver with raspberries and veal jus, caramelised duck ragout with orange juice, glazed carrots and sugar snap peas or, more lightly, fresh cheese with pumpernickel and beetroot.
Special features
Julia Bertram was German Wine Queen, and Benedikt Baltes comes from a fifth-generation Dernau winemaking family. They bottled their first vintage in 2014, immediately earning the "Discovery of the Year" award. The 2021 Ahr flood hit Dernau with full force, costing cellars, barrels and vintages; the 2022 comes from the period of rebuilding.
