About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that doesn't draw its depth from alcohol: 11.5 percent, built with balance, never loud yet full of expression.
Terroir and origin
The Trotzenberg lies in Marienthal in the Ahr valley. Weathered slate soils store the day's warmth, while the valley's cool nights preserve freshness in the grapes. Bertram-Baltes farms around four hectares in the Ahr's best sites, including plots with up to 70 percent slope that can only be worked by hand. Yields are kept to 30 to 40 hectoliters per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Noir, picked early. Spontaneous fermentation, aged in oak from Franconian forests, with barrels sourced exclusively from German coopers. No enrichment, no fining, bottled unfiltered. The vineyards have been organically farmed since 2020, with biodynamic certification as the goal.
On the palate
Lean and juicy, the fruit stays bright: red cherry and wild raspberry, joined by violet and a stony spiciness. The acidity carries the wine, the tannin is fine-grained, and the finish is cool and clear.
Food pairings
Pairs well with roasted duck breast, saddle of venison with cranberries, and mushroom dishes such as chanterelles. Also good with aged hard cheese, or lightly chilled alongside salmon.
Special features
Julia Bertram, a former German Wine Queen, and Benedikt Baltes run the family estate in its fifth generation. Their first vintage, bottled in 2014, was immediately hailed as discovery of the year. The 2021 Ahr flood inundated the cellar and swept away barrels. 2022 is the first vintage after the rebuild.
