About this wine

Character

A well-rounded red wine that favours fruit and drinkability over power: 11.5% abv, dry, with a polished structure. In the glass, a deep, dark cherry red with subtle lightening towards the rim.

Terroir and origin

Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes farm around four hectares across the best sites of the Ahr valley, fully organic since 2020. Weathered slate soils store the day's warmth, while cool nights rising from the valley preserve freshness. The steep slopes, with gradients reaching up to 70% in places, demand entirely manual work; yields sit at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.

Grape variety and vinification

A pure Frühburgunder from hand-harvested grapes. The fruit fermented spontaneously in local oak barrels, and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The estate neither chaptalises nor fines; the barrels come from German coopers working Franconian oak.

On the palate

Juicy and fruit-forward, led by cherry and damson, followed by plum, pomegranate and a touch of cassis. With air, fresh herbs, a hint of vanilla and graphite emerge. The fine fruit sweetness carries the wine without disturbing its dry impression.

Food pairing suggestions

Dishes with spice and acidity provide the counterpoint this wine seeks: grilled feta in barbecue marinade on rocket with pomegranate, monkfish tortillas with pointed cabbage and salsa or lamb fillet with yellow curry rice and coriander. Serve lightly chilled and decanted in Burgundy glasses.

Special features

Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes bottled their first vintage in 2014, immediately followed by the "Discovery of the Year" award. The 2021 Ahr flood submerged the cellars and swept away barrels; 2022 ranks among the vintages of the rebuilding period.
