About this wine
Character
A classically aged Sangiovese that, in the 2020 vintage, shows depth and complexity while already feeling approachable. The nose offers black cherry, barberry, raspberry, plum and blood orange, alongside mint, cedar, cherry stone, dried violet flowers, a touch of cinnamon and vanilla, crushed stone, underbrush and foliage.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Col d'Orcia's south-facing vineyards in Montalcino, on a hill overlooking the Orcia river, around 300 metres above sea level. A rainy start to winter, with a cold January and February and a little snow, was followed by a spring with rainfall and temperatures around the seasonal average. Summer was hot, with showers at the end of August. In September, the differences between day and night temperatures encouraged polyphenol synthesis, resulting in balanced phenolic ripeness.
Grape variety and vinification
Hand-harvested with strict selection, first in the vineyard and then on the sorting table in the cellar. Fermentation on the skins lasted around 15 days at controlled temperatures below 28°C, in shallow, wide 150-hectolitre steel tanks built specifically for gentle extraction of tannin and colour. After malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for four years, of which 32 months in 25-, 50- and 75-hectolitre botti of Slavonian oak and Allier oak, followed by at least twelve months in bottle at controlled temperature.
On the palate
Dense, juicy, ripe, carried by the acid and tannin structure typical of Sangiovese. Alongside this come sweet red and dark berry fruit, cherry, baking spices, a touch of quatre épices, ground stone and foliage. The finish is long, with liquorice and candied orange peel.
Details
Col d'Orcia lies in the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and farms 142 hectares of vines, 108 of which are planted to Brunello. Sheep and goats graze between the rows, and compost from the estate's own cycle nourishes the soils. Wine Enthusiast named the estate Environmental Advocate of the Year in 2025, and the Slow Wine Guide awarded it the SNAIL Award in 2023.
