About this wine
Character
An Amarone that aims for balance rather than power. It is multi-layered and beautifully evolved, with a bittersweet edge and that beguiling charm only bottle age can bring. The 16.0% vol. takes a back seat to freshness and structure.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the historic Valpolicella Classico zones of Marano and Fumane and grow on limestone. The terraced hillside vineyards lie between 150 and 300 metres, facing east-southeast, with clay and limestone soils that keep ripening slow and even. At the heart of the estate lies the Ravazzol single vineyard.
Grape variety and vinification
Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella from 50- to 70-year-old vines. Fermentation is spontaneous with wild yeasts, and ageing takes place in large wooden casks rather than barriques — a choice that favours terroir expression over oak spice.
On the palate
Subtly sweet, dense and juicy, the wine glides across the tongue with palpable charm. The fresh acidity keeps it lively, while the fine-grained, balanced tannin structure gives it backbone. Its maturity has it right at its peak.
Food pairings
With quail braised on radicchio in maple syrup with walnuts and beetroot, with cocoa pasta with strips of beef fillet, mushrooms and orange segments, or with a tartlet of Gorgonzola Dolce with dark chocolate and blackberry jelly.
Special features
Cà la Bionda was founded in 1902 and is run in its fourth generation by Alessandro and Nicola Castellani: Alessandro in the cellar, Nicola across the 29 hectares of terraced hillside vineyards in the Marano valley. The estate has farmed organically since 2012, with native Brogna sheep grazing between the vine rows. The Castellani family are among the founding members of FIVI.
