About this wine
Character
A lean, cool Spätburgunder from the Ahr that gets by on just 11.0% vol. and draws its density from structure rather than alcohol. Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes don't enrich and vinify in a distinctly reductive style. Accordingly, the 2023 vintage starts out rather closed: it needs time in the glass, ideally in a decanter.
Terroir and origin
Dernau is defined by steep slate and greywacke terraces; on the estate's steepest sites, some parcels reach gradients of up to 70 percent and can only be worked by hand. The vines behind this village wine are around 25 years old on average. All sites are farmed to organic and biodynamic principles, and the estate has worked entirely organically since 2020, with yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. The fruit is meticulously sorted, fermented spontaneously in open stainless steel tanks and aged in used barrique and half-barrique casks; the wood comes from German coopers using Franconian oak. There is no chaptalisation, fining or filtration. The Spätburgunder spends two winters in cask, with a minimal dose of sulphur added before bottling.
On the palate
Transparent cherry red in the glass. Behind the reduction lie earthy and stony notes, undergrowth and foliage, hung wild fowl, along with sloes, crisp plums and cherries. On the palate it's clear and pure, lean and cool, with hints of gunpowder, dark fruit, stone and mouth-watering salinity. Firm core, taut structure.
Special features
Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes bottled their first own vintage in 2014, and the "Discovery of the Year" award followed immediately. The 2021 Ahr flood hit Dernau with full force: flooded cellars, casks swept away, vintages lost. With support from fellow winemakers and wine friends, the two rebuilt the estate and today farm around four hectares.
