About this wine
Character
Medium ruby red in the glass, and the nose already reveals the clear influence of Grenache: ripe raspberries, wild strawberries and a touch of fig, joined by liquorice, Provençal herbs, dog rose and an earthy note. The fact that the grapes were not destemmed shows in the spicy note of stems and stalks.
Terroir and origin
Vacqueyras is Adrien Roustan's home village, where he owns his largest holding. For this wine he selects the best plots: from the Hautes Garrigues with red clay-limestone soil, which lend finesse and minerality, and from the Pendants with blue and yellow marl, which provide power and depth. The vineyard was planted in 1950.
Grape variety and vinification
The blend consists of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% each of Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvèdre. The grapes remained whole-cluster, were crushed and fermented promptly. The wine was aged in concrete.
On the palate
A real charmer: the wine glides smoothly and almost leanly across the palate, with fine, ripe berry fruit and remarkably fine tannin. The ancient Grenache vines lend depth, harmony and minerality, the acidity feels both ripe and lively, and the stems add extra freshness. A wine with great drinkability and elegance.
Food pairing suggestions
Chicken Provençal, tomato tarte tatin and rack of lamb with white beans and confit tomatoes.
Special features
In 2009, Adrien Roustan took over part of his grandfather Raymond Bertrand's vineyard and converted to organic farming in 2010; since 2020 he has worked biodynamically. He tends all 18 plots by hand, from pruning through to harvest. He uses no oenological additives, and sulphur is added only in homeopathic doses. The estate's name derives from Ouréa, the Greek god of mountains. 13.5% Vol., 1500ml Magnum.
