About this wine

Character

A mature dry Grüner Veltliner from the Wachau that openly shows its years while staying fresh. Golden leaning towards straw yellow in the glass, highly concentrated and spicy on the nose: coconut flakes, cocoa powder, light chocolate and roasted hazelnut, followed by dried mandarin, apricot, pineapple and plum.

Terroir and origin

The Ried Im Weingebirge lies above Mautern and is a Ried within a Ried: it belongs to the Ried Alte Point and borders the Rieden Strudel and Süssenberg. Six hectares climbing the slope northward from 206 to 225 metres. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which breaks through to the surface here and there, topped by clay and, above all, loess. As a vineyard, the site has been documented since the year 470 AD.

Grape variety and vinification

Grüner Veltliner, in the Wachau's Smaragd category, 13.5% vol., vinified dry. Nikolaihof has worked biodynamically according to Demeter principles since 1971; the musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks, where the estate's wines can rest for a decade or longer. For this purpose, the Roman vaulted cellar houses a 350-year-old tree press made of oak beams.

On the palate

The pronounced acidity feels lively and juicy like that of a green apple, cuts sharply across the tongue and leaves the palate fresh. The finish is slightly smoky and lingers for a very long time.

Special features

Archive Release 2024, released eighteen years after the vintage, bottled in Magnum format of 1500 ml. The winery of the Saahs family, who have farmed the estate since 1894, stands on Roman foundations dating from 63 BC.
