About this wine

Character

You wouldn't guess this Chinon has six years of age on it. It comes across as youthful and earthy, powerful and juicy, with impressively high acidity and tannin that is only just beginning to soften. A wine with plenty of potential.

Terroir and origin

Les Charmes is a vineyard on the heights of Anché, the neighbouring commune to Sazilly, on the left bank of the Vienne. The slope faces north, and the soil is clay and limestone. Charles Joguet took over the family estate in 1957 and from then on vinified each parcel separately rather than blending the grapes. Today the domaine farms 35 hectares, 30 of them planted to Cabernet Franc.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Cabernet Franc from 35-year-old vines. After five days of cool pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation on the skins takes around 15 days in wooden vats at 24°C to 26°C. The free-run wine is blended with the finest press wine, and malolactic fermentation and the six- to eight-month ageing period take place in large wood.

On the palate

On the nose, red berries with stems, along with red bell pepper, Espelette pepper, a touch of musk and garden herbs. On the palate, a trace of pyrazine lingers in the red berry fruit, accompanied by bell pepper and tomato. The finish is long and remarkably juicy.

Food pairings

With braised beef cheeks, roast duck or wild boar pâté, as well as with aged cow's milk cheese.

Special features

The domaine's cellars stretch across a hectare of hand-hewn tuffeau caves, where the temperature varies by less than half a degree over the course of the year. Cellar master Kevin Fontaine, with the estate since 2006, wants wines that speak of the terroir rather than the winemaker.
