About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling with a lean frame and plenty of drive. The nose shows lemon zest, green apple and white peach, backed by white blossom and a cool, stony note.

Terroir and origin

The Maustal is classified as a VDP.Grosse Lage, a steep south-facing slope that drops directly toward the Main. The Zehnthof Luckert estate in Sulzfeld, Franconia, has farmed its vineyards to Naturland standards for over ten years. Wolfgang and Ulrich Luckert run the estate from the prince-bishop's Zehnthof, built in 1558, the building that gives the estate its name.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure varietal Riesling, vinified dry. Cellar master Philipp Luckert, trained under Paul Fürst in Bürgstadt, works consistently with spontaneous fermentation and the vineyard's natural yeasts. The estate's wines age in traditional large oak casks from the Spessart forest, remain unfiltered and receive only minimal sulphur. Modern cellar technique thus sits alongside an old culture of cask ageing.

On the palate

The acidity carries the wine and keeps it upright, the fruit stays juicy, and the finish turns saline and lingers. At 12.5% alcohol, it gains body without becoming heavy.

Highlights

The Luckerts have been VDP members since 1955 and rank among the founding estates of Germany's top classification. Eichelmann has awarded the estate five stars continuously since 2016, and VINUM named it Estate of the Year 2025. Wolfgang and Ulrich Luckert are the only estate worldwide to cultivate all four colour variants of Silvaner.
