About this wine

Character

This Spätburgunder favours structure over fullness. Dark cherry and wild raspberry carry a cool, taut wine for which depth matters more than power. At 13.0% vol. it remains lean and dry.

Terroir and origin

The Maustal near Sulzfeld is a VDP.Grosse Lage: a steep south-facing slope right on the Main river, shaped by Franconian shell limestone. This limestone lends the wine its saline character and cool energy. The wines are made at the prince-bishop's Zehnthof, dating from 1558.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir. Cellar master Philipp Luckert, trained under Paul Fürst in Bürgstadt, consistently ferments spontaneously with natural yeasts. The wine matures in traditional large oak casks from the Spessart forest and is bottled unfiltered with minimal sulphur addition.

On the palate

Blackcurrant and dark cherry define the opening, followed by violet, undergrowth and a fine toasted spice note. The tannin is silky, the acidity vibrant and well integrated, the finish mineral and long. A little air in the glass and a not-too-warm serving temperature do it good.

Food pairings

Braised leg of lamb with herbs, duck breast with red cabbage or Franconian Schäufele. Also venison ragout, porcini mushroom pan and aged Comté.
