About this wine
Character
The MeiBusch 2021 is a dry red wine made from Grenache, Carignan and Syrah, crafted jointly by Florian Busch and Georg Meissner: a vin de deux amis from two terroirs in the south of France. Garnet red with slightly violet hues. On the nose, the Grenache leads with ripe raspberries and liquorice, followed by elderberry, blackberry, cherry, beetroot, earth and garrigue, alongside a cool, stony note within the ripe fruit.
Terroir and origin
Grenache and Carignan come from the small village of Cassagnes in Roussillon, where they grow on granite and gneiss. Syrah and Carignan come from limestone scree in the Terrasses du Larzac in the Languedoc. The vines are 30 to 120 years old. Florian Busch, who founded his domaine in Jonquières in the Terrasses du Larzac in 2018, aims for freshness in his wines.
Grape variety and vinification
Grenache, Carignan and Syrah ferment spontaneously for two weeks and macerate in stainless steel tank, before being hand-pressed in a small basket press. The wine spent nine months in stainless steel tank and was bottled unfined and unfiltered, with 28 mg SO₂ total.
On the palate
Crisp and very juicy: plenty of tart, ripe cherry, a touch of redcurrant, plus blackberry. Liquorice brings warmth, stony minerality and mint bring coolness, and a lively, almost taut acidity balances against the sweetness of the fruit. Fine texture, beautifully balanced.
Food pairing
Tart of the last tomatoes with black olives and a touch of ricotta, candied pork knuckle with olives, garlic and cherries, or roasted sea bass and candied fennel.
Special features
900 bottles were produced. The two winemakers have known each other for a long time, since Georg Meissner's time at the South Tyrolean estate Lageder, when Flo Busch took care of the vineyards; today they collaborate on joint projects, the MeiBusch being one of them. Bottled in Montpeyroux by Paola Ponsich and Florian Busch; the label carries the Demeter logo.
