About this wine

Character

The Ravazzol 2016 is the Amarone from Cà la Bionda's finest vineyard: dense and deep, yet dynamic, with a herbal, spicy streak that keeps the dried grape material bright. Alessandro and Nicola Castellani run the estate in its fourth generation and are working toward a Valpolicella built on elegance rather than power. This wine shows exactly what that means.

Terroir and origin

Ravazzol lies in the Marano Valley, at the heart of the estate's 29 hectares of terraced hillside vineyards. The vines sit between 150 and 300 metres on steep, east-southeast-facing terraces, on clay and limestone, and are 50 to 70 years old. The exposure ensures slow, even ripening, while the soil lends minerality.

Grape variety and vinification

Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella make up the blend. Alessandro Castellani calls Corvina a wild Pinot Noir, a variety with complex herbal notes that needs to be understood. Fermentation happens spontaneously with the estate's own yeasts, and aging takes place in large oak casks rather than barriques, keeping the wood in the background. 16.0% ABV, dry.

On the palate

Dried sour cherry and dried plum, underscored by dark chocolate, tobacco and dried herbs. The tannin is silky, the acidity lively, and a saline streak carries the high alcohol rather than letting it feel sweet.

Food pairings

Braised beef, classic braised dishes such as Brasato all'Amarone, and mature hard cheese.

Highlights

Founded in 1902, the estate has been farmed organically since 2012. Brogna sheep, an endangered breed native to the Veneto, graze between the vine rows, keeping the grass short and fertilizing the soil. The Castellanis have deliberately reduced their Amarone volumes and dedicated whole parcels to Valpolicella Classico; as co-founders of FIVI, they stand for independent, artisanal winemaking.
