About this wine
Character
A dry white wine focused on tension and clarity rather than sheer volume. Concentration and finesse are not mutually exclusive here: the wine feels calm, never loud, and remains remarkably light on its feet at 12.5% ABV.
Terroir and Origin
Apetlon is situated at the southeastern corner of Lake Neusiedl, where the Pannonian climate is pronounced: hot, dry summers, cold winters, and strong diurnal temperature shifts. The soils consist of limestone and gravel interspersed with sand. Winemaker Heinz Velich and his brother Roland, who oversees sales and communications, have managed this Burgenland estate since the early 1990s.
Grape Varieties and Vinification
Three varieties, three distinct contributions: Sauvignon Blanc imparts herbal spice, Chardonnay adds structure and substance, and Welschriesling brings vibrant acidity and subtle fruit. Heinz Velich works with minimal yields, selects meticulously, and avoids oenological shortcuts. Spontaneous fermentation, extended lees aging, and restrained sulfur additions are standard practice here, alongside the patience to give each wine the time it needs.
On the Palate
Juicy and straightforward, carried by vibrant acidity and a taut body. Lemon and green apple lead the way, followed by a nutty nuance and the herbal spice of the Welschriesling. The finish remains clean and distinctly mineral.
Special Features
A three-variety cuvée from an estate that built its reputation on single-varietal whites. The 1500 ml magnum format slows bottle maturation, making it an ideal choice for sharing in larger company. Bottled by Weingut Velich in Apetlon.
