About this wine
Character
A white wine of cool precision: taut in structure, underpinned by salinity, with a vibrancy drawn from herbal notes and citrus freshness. Already open and enjoyable in its youth, it will continue to gain depth over the coming years.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow in Apetlon on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, where the Pannonian climate brings hot, dry summers, cold winters and pronounced temperature swings. Soils of limestone and gravel, interspersed with sand, give the Chardonnay its mineral tension. The Tiglat single vineyard was already planted in 1959.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Chardonnay from minimal yields and meticulous selection. Fermentation begins spontaneously with wild yeasts, ageing takes place in Burgundian barrels, with extended lees contact and restrained use of sulfur. Fining and filtration are applied only when necessary; the wine matures for a long time before release. 14.0% vol.
On the palate
On the nose, citrus and delicate peach, along with sea breeze, flint and white bread crust; the yeasty notes are still clearly present, with hints of sage and mint beneath. On the palate, playful, juicy and powerful, carried by pronounced salinity and fine tannins.
Food pairing recommendations
With intense, aromatic dishes with piquant spice.
Distinctive features
The Tiglat put the Velich winery on the international map. Its name is an old dialect term for a small section of the Ried. Heinz Velich is responsible for the work in the vineyard and cellar, while his brother Roland handles sales and communication.
