About this wine
Character
Powerful and charming at once: a dry Chardonnay at 14.0% ABV that brings together concentration and clarity. It doesn't force itself on you but unfolds layer by layer.
Terroir and origin
The Velich winery is located in Apetlon, at the south-eastern tip of Lake Neusiedl, where the Pannonian climate holds sway, with hot, dry summers, cold winters and extreme temperature swings. The soils consist of limestone and gravel interspersed with sand; the Darscho grows on the somewhat deeper-soiled plots. Darscho is the name of one of the small ponds that create the extraordinary microclimate of the Seewinkel.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay from vines between 20 and 40 years old. Heinz Velich works with minimal yields, selects meticulously and forgoes any oenological tricks: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, ageing in Burgundian oak barrels, extended lees ageing, restrained use of sulphur. The wine matures considerably longer before coming to market.
On the palate
Intense golden yellow in the glass. The nose oscillates between nutty, smoky and vanilla notes and intense fruit of orange and vineyard peach, alongside a minerality that practically leaps out of the glass. On the palate it is juicy, fruity, invigorating: the crisp, fresh acidity sits embedded in the fruit, rounded off by a creamy richness. The fullness is resounding yet remains vibrantly alive.
Special features
Heinz and Roland Velich have been devoted to white wine since the early 1990s; their Darscho is regarded as an Austrian benchmark. The 1500 ml Magnum format extends the bottle ageing of this Chardonnay.
