About this wine
Character
The UV Tempranillo 2022 favours clarity over power. At 13.5% vol., it remains dry and dynamic, with silky tannin and acidity that carries the ripe fruit through to the finish. A Rioja that puts drive and drinkability ahead of extraction.
Terroir and origin
The Tempranillo vines of Rioja Alavesa grow on limestone soils that give the estate's wines their mineral signature. Remírez de Ganuza farms 76 hectares, divided into 246 individual parcels across nine municipalities. 70% of the vines are over 70 years old, some over a century. The fruit comes from this mosaic of old vines and microclimatic diversity.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Tempranillo. The winery was founded in 1989 by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza (1951–2024) in Samaniego, with the first vintage following in 1991. The former vineyard broker built Spain's first mechanical sorting table in 1989, separating the sun-riper shoulders of the grape bunches from the tips ever since. Since 2019, José Ramón Urtasun has run the estate as sole owner.
On the palate
A powerful entry, fine-grained tannin, with dark blackberry and morello cherry. A subtle toasted note and a cool, chalky minerality keep the wine lean on the finish.
Food pairings
With braised lamb ragout and oven-roasted lamb chops, with Jamón Ibérico, seared beef fillet, hearty mushroom dishes and aged Manchego.
Special features
Cellar master Jesús Mendoza has been with the estate since 1994, and chief oenologist since 2001. He was named best Rioja winemaker in 2024 and 2025.
