About this wine
Character
Dark, transparent ruby red. The nose stays in motion: dark cherry opens things up, followed by morello cherry, a touch of sloe, damp forest floor, truffle and finally a trace of morning mist. Deep and dark-fruited, unfolding in many layers.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the three vineyards Mompellini, Loreto and San Grato in the communes of Canale and Santo Stefano. Roero's soils are made of sand that in ancient times formed the seabed of the Gulf of Padania, here with varying clay content and southwest, west and east exposures. Luca Faccenda and Carolina Roggera farm 3.5 hectares on steep, sandy slopes between 260 and 400 metres above sea level.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo from young and old vines; for the Riserva, the 77-year-old vines take centre stage. Harvesting is done according to vintage, vine and site, at the ideal point of ripeness, with separate fermentation. After the required barrel ageing, the wine is bottled under the waning autumn moon in the year after harvest and released after nearly a year of bottle ageing.
On the palate
Precise and radiant, concentrated yet light on its feet. The tannins are polished just enough to keep their firm bite while still leaving room for the fruit. A wine for now, not for eternity in the cellar, yet as serious as the variety demands. 14.0% vol., dry.
Food pairings
Truffle risotto, hare ragù with tagliatelle or eel braised in red wine.
Special features
Valfaccenda was founded in 2010 by Luca Faccenda and Carolina Roggera in Canale and grows only the native varieties Nebbiolo and Arneis. Luca's guiding principle is: "Everything is already in the grape, we just have to preserve it." Together with Alberto Oggero and Enrico Cauda, he founded the SoloRoero collective, dedicated to bringing more attention to the Roero.
