About this wine

Character

A mature Valpolicella in which the fruit has receded, leaving earth, wood and spice to define the picture. Alessandro and Nicola Castellani run Cà la Bionda in the fourth generation: Alessandro oversees the cellar, Nicola the 29 hectares of terraced hillside vineyards in the Marano Valley. Their wines favour elegance and balance over power.

Terroir and origin

The single vineyard Campo Casal Vegri lies in the Classico zone at 150 to 300 metres. The east-facing vines grow on clay and limestone with a high stone content, which encourages slow, even ripening. Founded in 1902, the estate has been farmed organically since 2012; Brogna sheep, an endangered breed from the Veneto, graze between the rows.

Grape variety and vinification

Around 70 percent Corvina, 20 percent Corvinone, and 10 percent Rondinella and Molinara. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at no more than 25 °C, with ten days on the skins. The wine then ages for nine years in 3,000-litre wooden casks, as is customary at the estate, which favours large casks over barriques. 13.5% vol., dry.

On the palate

Transparent brick red in the glass. On the nose, subtle sour cherry and wild berries, layered with undergrowth, tobacco, damp dry wood, leather, dried herbs and a hint of truffle. On the palate, ripe sweetness meets freshness and juiciness, the tannin is fine, the body elegant. As it warms, dried black cherry and plum emerge, while clove, cinnamon blossom and floral notes mark the long finish.

Food pairings

Wild partridge terrine with lamb's lettuce and cranberries, milk-fed veal loin and porcini pesto with creamy polenta, or violet-hued risotto with Amarone and Monte Veronese.

Distinctive features

A Late Release from a particularly fine vintage: after ageing in wood, this wine was bottled exclusively in magnums.
