About this wine
Character
The primary fruit has receded, tertiary aromatics shape the picture: sour cherry, wild raspberry and redcurrant form the foundation, overlaid with an earthy note of beetroot, roasted walnut and hazelnut, hints of cinnamon and long-stewed plum, plus coffee and finely grated bitter chocolate. A fine smokiness runs through the bouquet without masking the fruit or spice.
Terroir and origin
The Casal Vegri hillside site lies in the Marano Valley at 150 to 300 metres above sea level, facing east and southeast. The soil is predominantly clay-limestone, rich in calcium with a substantial rock content; it lends the wines freshness and elegance. Nicola Castellani has farmed the 29 hectares of terraced slopes organically since 2012, with Brogna sheep grazing between the vine rows.
Grape variety and vinification
70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella and Molinara. Fermentation is spontaneous with the estate's own yeasts; the wine then aged for ten years in large oak casks and only reached the market after around ten years of cask and bottle ageing. Appassimento plays no part.
On the palate
Balanced and distinctly umami-driven. The pronounced acidity lends freshness and tension, the fine, velvety tannin structure lingers and is repeatedly cut through by the acidity. A fresh apple note provides contrast to the earthy, nutty and roasted tones, bringing juiciness. The finish is long, juicy and precise.
Food pairings
Braised beef cheeks, porcini risotto, duck confit, game in a dark sauce, or a piece of aged Montasio.
Special features
The best fruit from this parcel goes into the Valpolicella rather than the Amarone selection: Cà la Bionda has deliberately scaled back its Amarone production, dedicating entire vineyard parcels to Valpolicella Classico instead. Alessandro and Nicola Castellani run the estate, founded in 1902, in its fourth generation and are among the co-founders of the winegrowers' association FIVI.
