About this wine

Character

A tightly structured Nebbiolo that shows its power through tension and length rather than sheer weight. The 3000 ml Double Magnum format slows the ageing process, setting this wine up for decades in the cellar.

Terroir and origin

Monvigliero is one of nine cru vineyards farmed by Vietti across 75 hectares. The house has been based since 1873 in Castiglione Falletto, the medieval village perched on a 350-metre hill in Piedmont. Monvigliero yields a floral, finely structured Barolo.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Nebbiolo, dry-vinified, 14.0% ABV. Vietti's practice of vinifying individual vineyards separately dates back to 1961, when Alfredo Currado bottled the region's very first cru wines, the Rocche di Castiglione and the Barbaresco Masseria, to the bemusement of his neighbours. What he established then is now the standard.

On the palate

Dense and silky at once, carried by red cherry, dried rose petals and undergrowth, alongside fine spice notes and an ethereal lift. The tannin is firm and well defined, the acidity fresh, the finish mineral and long.

Food pairing recommendations

With braised beef and braised venison haunch, with truffle dishes, and with aged Parmigiano Reggiano and Castelmagno.

Highlights

Since 1974, the bottles have featured original artworks by artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1967, Alfredo Currado was the first to vinify Arneis as a single varietal, earning his place in history as the father of Arneis. In 2016, the Krause family took over the winery, and in 2025 Vietti was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine.
