About this wine

Character

The Walporzheimer Kräuterberg 2023 is a single-varietal Pinot Noir that puts elegance before power. Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes have turned the old Ahr equation on its head: the goal is no longer overripeness, but early-picked grapes with naturally moderate alcohol. Here, 12.5 percent stands for structure and depth rather than weight.

Terroir and origin

The Kräuterberg belongs to Walporzheim, one of the Ahr valley's most storied villages. Weathered slate soils store the day's warmth, while cool nights in the valley preserve freshness. The estate farms around four hectares of steep sites, worked entirely by hand; individual parcels reach gradients of up to 70 percent. Yields run at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, known as Spätburgunder on the Ahr. The estate has farmed fully organically since 2020. The wine ferments spontaneously and ages in local oak, with barrels sourced exclusively from German coopers using Franconian wood. There is no chaptalisation, no fining, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

On the palate

The nose shows red cherry and wild raspberry, followed by black tea and dried herbs. The body stays slender, the tannin is ripe and fine-grained, and the acidity carries it all. The finish lingers long and saline.

Food pairing recommendations

With duck breast with cherries, saddle of venison in red wine jus or porcini risotto. Also pairs well with mushrooms with thyme and polenta, roast chicken with herbs and aged soft cheese.

Special features

Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes bottled their first vintage in 2014 and were immediately named "Discovery of the Year". In 2021 the flood hit Dernau with full force: flooded cellars, barrels swept away, vintages lost. The estate was rebuilt without compromising on quality.
