About this wine

Character

The A l'Aube de la Côte des Bar Brut Nature 2013 from Louise Brison is a vintage Champagne that spent over ten years on the lees and was disgorged with no dosage in February 2025. The nose brings together fresh and evolved notes: soft ripe apples, pears and quince, lemon curd, candied orange peel and candied ginger, along with bread crust, buttered toast and almond pastry.

Terroir and origin

The vineyards around Noé-les-Mallets in the Côte des Bar sit on southeast-facing slopes between 280 and 320 metres. The subsoil is Kimmeridgian limestone, whose strata hold fossils of the oyster Exogyra virgula. This minerality runs through the whole wine.

Grape variety and vinification

A blend of 50 percent Pinot Noir and 50 percent Chardonnay from the 2013 vintage. Delphine Brulez separates the musts across four pressings, and fermentation takes place with wild yeasts in used Burgundy barrels, where the base wine also continues to mature. The blend was brought together in stainless steel and bottled in June 2014. Disgorged in February 2025, with zero grams of dosage.

On the palate

Fine mousse, silky texture, followed by taut acidity and vibrant minerality. Once again soft, fresh stone fruit, along with berries and pome fruit and piquant zesty notes. Maturity and freshness stay in balance, the finish is long and present.

Food pairings

With oysters, grilled lobster and scallops, as well as with turbot in beurre blanc or aged Comté.

Highlights

Champagne Louise Brison was founded in 1910 and is now run in its fourth generation by Delphine Brulez. All the house's Champagnes are vintage-dated and Brut Nature, meaning no sugar is added. In the vineyard she follows the Simonit-Sirch method of gentle pruning; under her stewardship, mycorrhizal presence in the soil has risen from 18 to 70 percent.
