About this wine

Character

An orange wine of great density: intense, complex and, despite its tannin and earthy grounding, weightless. Vinified dry, 14.5% ABV.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow on the clay-sandstone terroir of Pflixbourg near Colmar, on clay and sandstone. The estate is based in Riquewihr, where Andrée Trapet took over the family business in 2002; since 2018, day-to-day work has been in the hands of her sons Pierre and Louis. Farming is biodynamic: échalas stakes support each vine individually, the soils are cover-cropped, and copper and sulphur use is kept to a minimum.

Grape variety and vinification

A single-varietal Gewürztraminer, fermented in amphora with the skins and then left on the skins for over a month. This is where the amber color, tannin and spicy depth come from.

On the palate

At this young stage, the wine deserves a wide-bellied decanter. It then opens up with dried apricots, nectarines and mirabelle plums, orange peel, roses, acacia blossom, jasmine, linden blossom and broom, along with mead, Assam tea and amaro. On the palate it is full, gliding smoothly with gentle resistance, the acidity carries it through, and the medium-grained tannic structure provides backbone. A sweetness is perceptible, yet the wine is fully fermented through. The aromatics remain dense: apricot preserve, Moroccan spices, candied ginger, roses.

Special features

This wine belongs to the Ambre series, through which Pierre and Louis Trapet introduced macerated white wines to their range: alongside this Gewürztraminer are the Ambre Blanc from Muscat, the Ambre Jaune from Riesling and the Ambre Rouge from Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Floral abundance and dry tannic rigor meet here in a single wine.
