About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling that shows the estate's signature in its purest form: taut structure, juicy, carried by saline minerality. Powerful yet elegant, with perfect balance — this is how Steffen Christmann describes his ideal of the prima ballerino among Rieslings. The 1500-millilitre magnum format works in favour of graceful ageing.
Terroir and origin
The A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen in the Palatinate dates back to 1798. All 17 hectares are classified VDP.ERSTE or VDP.GROSSE LAGE, including IDIG in Königsbach, Meerspinne, Ölberg-Hart and Vogelsang. Soils of variegated sandstone, limestone and terraced gravel shape each parcel differently.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling makes up 70 percent of the vineyard area, with the remainder shared between Pinot Noir and a little Pinot Blanc. The family has farmed organically since 2002 and biodynamically since 2003, certified respekt-BIODYN and EU organic. Horn manure, horn silica and compost preparations replace synthetic chemistry, and work in the vineyard follows the lunar calendar. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Dry and lean, with lively acidity as its backbone. Lime and white grapefruit upfront, followed by ripe peach and apricot, floral nuances and a stony trace. The saline note and silky texture carry the cool thread through to the finish.
Food pairing recommendations
A classic match for pan-fried pikeperch or trout meunière, as well as Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass. Pork fillet with a light jus and asparagus with hollandaise sauce also find a fine partner here.
Distinctive features
Three generations stand behind the estate: Fritz Christmann, over 90 years old and still working the vineyards, Steffen Christmann, president of the VDP since 2007, and daughter Sophie Christmann, part of the business since 2018. In the IDIG vineyard, the family owns 95 percent of the classified area.
