About this wine
Character
A rosé with weight: juicy red fruit, lively acidity and a tannin that is ripe yet clearly present. At 12.0% vol., the wine stays dry and lively without losing depth. It calls for food pairing rather than casual sipping.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on Monte Amiata, a volcano dormant for 180,000 years in southern Tuscany, at 600 to 850 metres above sea level. The soils combine limestone, marl, schist, volcanic silicates and quartz. Temperature swings between day and night reach up to 20 degrees, preserving acidity and aromatics in the grapes.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Sangiovese from 5.5 hectares of organically farmed vineyard planted by Sebastian Nasello and Ugo Fabbri. Yields are capped at a maximum of 40 hectolitres per hectare. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and concrete, with cool maceration and partial whole-cluster fermentation, without any new barriques. The wine is bottled unfined and with only minimal sulphur.
On the palate
Juicy, red-fruited and refreshing. Pomegranate, fresh sour cherry and wild raspberry lead, underscored by rosehip jelly and a hint of vanilla. Acidity and tannin are ripe yet present, carrying a powerful structure.
Food pairings
This wine calls for intense cooking with concentrated sauces and piquant accompaniments: pan-fried calf's liver with veal jus and pickled raspberries, strawberry and mozzarella salad on toasted ciabatta, or warm rhubarb salad with salmon and beetroot.
Distinctive features
Sebastian Nasello spent years vinifying Brunello as cellar master at Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino before founding Bakkanali with Ugo Fabbri in 2017. The estate farms organically and is transitioning to biodynamic practices, with annual production of around 25,000 bottles. The name references the Roman Bacchanalia, festivals held in honour of Bacchus, the god of wine.
