About this wine
Character
A dry Sangiovese rosé built for depth rather than quick refreshment. Vibrant acidity, a low pH and an almost blood-like minerality give it drive and definition, while 12.0% ABV keeps it lean. Don't expect jammy fruit here.
Terroir and origin
Bakkanali's 5.5 hectares of vineyards lie at 600 to 850 metres above sea level on Monte Amiata, a volcano dormant for 180,000 years and, at 1,738 metres, the highest peak in southern Tuscany, half an hour from Montalcino. Limestone, marl, schist, volcanic silicates and quartz define the soils. Temperature swings of up to 20 degrees between day and night preserve the grapes' acidity and aromatics, with the cool nights slowing ripening.
Grape variety and vinification
Sangiovese, harvested at no more than 40 hectolitres per hectare. Sebastian Nasello, previously cellar master at Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino, and Ugo Fabbri ferment in stainless steel and concrete, working with cold maceration and partial whole-cluster fermentation, and forgo new barriques. The wine is bottled unfined and with only minimal sulphur.
On the palate
Redcurrant, cherry and pink grapefruit, alongside floral notes. The acidity carries the wine, with a finish that stays cool and saline-mineral.
Distinctive traits
The vineyards are organically farmed, and the estate, founded in 2017, is moving towards biodynamic practice. Annual production stands at around 25,000 bottles, with this Rosa offered in a 1500 ml magnum. The name refers to the Roman Bacchanalia, the festivals held in honour of Bacchus, god of wine.
