About this wine
Character
Purple-red with a dark core and violet highlights. On the nose, cherry, banana bread and dark chocolate, alongside jellied fruits, an unexpected bay leaf note and a sprig of thyme. Youthful fruit as shaped by semi-carbonic fermentation, with the grape variety's stature emerging behind it.
Terroir and origin
The plot measures 0.9 hectares and sits at 600 metres altitude on Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano in southern Tuscany. The estate itself spans between 600 and 850 metres. The soil is a clay-silt marl with no skeleton. The elevation brings cool nights; temperature swings between day and night reach up to 20 degrees, which preserves the grapes' acidity and aromatics.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Sangiovese from 19-year-old vines farmed biodynamically, hand-harvested. The whole clusters ferment spontaneously under semi-carbonic conditions, with maceration lasting around two weeks. The wine is then gently foot-pressed, and the must remains in infusion for a further two days. Ageing takes place in wooden barrels, with sulphur additions kept below 25 mg/l total SO₂.
On the palate
Dark fruit and juicy extract, the tannin plush, the acidity assertive without ever dominating. It gives the wine drive and carries its drinkability. 13.0 percent alcohol, dry. A Sangiovese for the curious.
Special features
Sebastian Nasello and Ugo Fabbri founded Bakkanali in 2017 and farm 5.5 hectares on Monte Amiata; yields are capped at a maximum of 40 hectolitres per hectare, and bottling is done unfined with only minimal sulphur. Around 4000 bottles of the Kani were produced.
