About this wine
Character
The Barbaresco DOCG Roncaglie 2021 is a delicate, fragrant Nebbiolo from a single vineyard in the commune of Barbaresco. In the glass, cherry red with medium transparency; on the nose, rose petals and mint over underbrush, wood and earth, with a touch of cola and red fruit. A wine that doesn't seek its elegance through weight.
Terroir and origin
The Roncaglie vineyard lies at around 280 metres above sea level, facing south and southwest, on calcareous, clay and sandy soils. Vietti, founded in 1873 by Carlo Vietti in Castiglione Falletto, today cultivates 75 hectares across nine crus.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo from vines with an average age of 34 years, trained using the Guyot method, with 4,600 vines per hectare. Three to four days of cold maceration, 20 to 25% whole berries, then 25 days of maceration in stainless steel, with the cap of pomace only submerged. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by 24 months of ageing in large wood.
On the palate
Fine, elegant and lively: clear acidity, still firm medium-grained tannin, a pulsing minerality that carries the wine. Along with a warm fruit component and floral notes once again; blanched almonds define the long finish. Dry, 14.5% vol.
Special features
In 1961, Alfredo Currado vinified grapes from individual vineyards separately, creating one of the first Barolo crus; in 1967, he saved Arneis from extinction. Since 1974, the bottles have featured original works by artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 2025, Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
