About this wine
Character
A Barolo whose power comes from structure rather than sheer weight. The tension between acidity and tannin stays taut throughout, with the fruit subordinated to that architecture. A wine with poise, built to age.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Langhe in Piedmont. Since its founding in 1873, Vietti has been based in Castiglione Falletto, a medieval village on a hill 350 metres high. The estate now comprises 75 hectares, including the vineyards Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera, Cerequio, Monvigliero and Villero.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-variety Nebbiolo, Piedmont's flagship red grape. It naturally carries little color but marked acidity and a firm tannic structure – the foundation for the longevity of this dry wine at 14.5% ABV. The practice of vinifying individual vineyards separately dates back to Alfredo Currado, who in 1961 created one of the region's first cru wines with the Rocche di Castiglione.
On the palate
Dense and upright, with fine-grained tannin and a vein of acidity that carries the wine. On the nose, ripe morello cherry, dried rose petals and leather, along with an ethereal spice note. The finish remains long and mineral.
Food pairing
With hearty braised dishes: braised beef, venison goulash or braised lamb shank with herb polenta. Equally well with tagliolini with fresh truffle and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno.
Highlights
Since 1974, Vietti's bottles have featured original works by artists, including Claudio Bonichi, Pietro Cascella and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1967, Alfredo Currado vinified Arneis as a single variety for the first time, earning him a place in history as the father of Arneis. In 2025, Doctor Wine named the estate Azienda dell'Anno.
