About this wine

Character

A Barolo of pressure and depth that carries its power through fine tannin rather than sheer force. The dark fruit is threaded with floral and earthy notes, while the structure remains clearly defined. 14.5% vol., dry.

Terroir and origin

The Mosconi vineyard covers three hectares in Monforte d'Alba, at around 400 metres above sea level. The grapes come from the oldest parcels of the vineyard. The soil consists of calcareous, slightly grey-tinged clay marl alternating with silica-rich sandstone; where calcium carbonate and iron appear, the colouring turns warmer, taking on a faint pink hue. The cool nights give the wine finely structured tannin.

Grape variety and vinification

Nebbiolo in the Michet and Lampia variants. Harvest began in early October and was completed by 12 October. Fermentation took place in rotary tanks with two pump-overs a day and 14 days of skin contact, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. This was followed by two years' ageing in large casks and barriques of French oak.

On the palate

Deep cherry red, barely transparent. On the nose, cassis, blackberry and blueberry, joined by hung meat, lavender and violet, leather, undergrowth, a touch of liquorice, tobacco and mint. On the palate, juicy, firm and vibrant, with a light floral perfume, great pressure and power; tobacco, spice and earthy notes sit within the dark fruit. The tannin is finely grained and gripping, and the wine retains its depth and structural clarity.

Distinctive features

Chiara Boschis took over E.Pira & Figli in 1990, becoming the first woman to own and run an estate in the Langhe; her debut vintage won the Tre Bicchieri award. As the only woman among the Barolo Boys, she championed shorter maceration times and ageing in French barriques. Since 2010 she has run the estate with her brother Giorgio, eleven hectares across Barolo, Monforte and Serralunga. This bottling comes as a 1500-millilitre magnum.
