About this wine

Character

A Barbaresco of silky texture and precise definition. Red fruit leads, the tannin carries without pressing, and the wine already reveals its sensuous side while young.

Terroir and origin

The three hectares of the Basarin site in Neive joined the estate in 2014 and were converted straight to organic and biodynamic farming. The vines on the plot are around 50 years old, with an average yield of 40 hl/ha.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Nebbiolo. The destemmed grapes ferment spontaneously in open stainless-steel vats, the cap is punched down regularly, and maceration on the skins lasts up to 60 days. Since 2020 the wine has aged for around 24 months in large, slightly tapered botti before being bottled unfiltered.

On the palate

Ripe dark red cherry and berry fruit, alongside underbrush, foliage, mint, black tea, mocha and dark chocolate. The tannin is silky, the acidity fine, yet the wine remains transparent and clear. On the nose, sweet cherry, ripe wild strawberry, raspberry and orange lead, over liquorice and ethereal mint.

Food pairings

With porcini risotto and beetroot, tandoori swordfish steaks, and rabbit legs with cherry-fennel barbecue sauce.

Distinctive features

Andrea, Elena and Claudia Sottimano now run the estate in Neive, which Rino Sottimano acquired in Cottà in the late 1960s. It has been farmed without herbicides or synthetic fertilisers for over forty years. Basarin is one of the estate's five single vineyards.
