About this wine
Character
A classic Barbaresco with youthfully austere tannin and expansive fruit. The 2014 vintage is open and approachable, while its freshness remains transparent. Bright, clear ruby red in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The Currá vineyard lies in Neive, where Rino Sottimano acquired the Cottà estate in the late 1960s and planted most of the plots himself during the 1970s and 80s. The vines are now 55 to 70 years old, growing on stark soils of pure limestone. Currá stands for extraction and longevity. The estate is run by Andrea, Elena and Claudia Sottimano.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Nebbiolo, spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts from vineyard and cellar. Maceration on the skins lasts up to sixty days, and malolactic fermentation begins without heating, once the cellar naturally warms in spring. This is followed by 24 to 30 months in used Burgundy pièces with only fifteen percent new oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, 14.0% ABV.
On the palate
Plenty of juiciness and richness on entry, underpinned by bacon, bay leaf and juniper. The delicate acid structure keeps the wine agile, with a finish that stays fruity and coolly mineral.
Food pairings
With pasta with truffles, braised sardines in a piquant tomato sauce with black olives, or oven-roasted pork with dried fruit, thyme and root vegetables.
Special features
Organically farmed for over forty years: no herbicides, no synthetic fertilisers. The grass between the rows is mown two to three times a year, with every other row ploughed in autumn.
