About this wine

Character

A Nebbiolo that hides nothing: clear red fruit, young tannin and the acidity that carries this variety. Because Sottimano bottles it unfined and unfiltered, the wine feels all the more alive in the glass. Dry, 14.5% vol.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow on the hills of Neive and Treiso within the Barbaresco zone. In Cottà, where Rino Sottimano acquired the estate in the late 1960s, the family farms just under twenty hectares; many vines, planted in the 1970s and 80s, are now fifty to sixty years old. When the winery opts for declassification, grapes from the Basarin single vineyard also go into the Langhe Nebbiolo.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Nebbiolo. Andrea Sottimano lets the must macerate on the skins for up to sixty days, allowing the wine to develop colour, tannin and structure at its own pace. Fermentation is spontaneous, driven by wild yeasts from the vineyard and cellar. Malolactic fermentation only begins once the cellar naturally warms up in spring, and can continue into autumn. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

On the palate

Sour cherry and red forest berries, underscored by dried rose petals, undergrowth and fine spice. The acidity stays juicy, and the young, firm tannin gives the wine the backbone it needs for a few years of bottle ageing.

Distinctive features

Organic viticulture for over forty years, with no herbicides or synthetic fertilisers: the grass between the rows is mown two to three times a year, and every other row is ploughed in autumn. Bottled in 1500 ml magnums by Az. Agr. Sottimano in Neive.
