About this wine

Character

The Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2021 is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from Neive that draws its impact from balance rather than power. Tannin, fruit, acidity, bitter notes and minerality stand in equilibrium, with the fruit remaining a vehicle for spice and earthy depth.

Terroir and origin

The three hectares of the Basarin cru lie in Neive, where Azienda Agricola Sottimano has been based in Cottà since the late 1960s. Andrea, Elena and Claudia Sottimano today farm almost twenty hectares. The parcel was added in 2014 and converted straight to organic and biodynamic cultivation. The vines are around 50 years old, with an average yield of 40 hl/ha.

Grape variety and vinification

The Nebbiolo is destemmed and fermented spontaneously, spending up to 60 days on the skins. In open stainless-steel fermenters, the cap is regularly punched down. Since 2020 the wine has aged for around 24 months in large, slightly conical botti and is bottled unfiltered and unfined. 14.5% Vol., dry.

On the palate

Sour cherry, cassis and raspberry open the picture, followed by juniper, black pepper, allspice and cubeb pepper, alongside rosehip tea, cranberry and dried fig. Toasted notes, cold smoke and forest floor add accents, joined by dried herbs such as marjoram, tarragon and savory. Juicy, with pronounced, well-integrated acidity and a silky mouthfeel. The finish retains juniper, allspice and the dried herbs.

Food pairings

Braised leg of lamb with fresh peas and rosemary potatoes, cassoulet of beans, bacon and pointed cabbage, or pan-seared duck breast with beetroot and horseradish sauce.

Special features

The Magnum holds 1500 ml. The vineyards have been farmed without herbicides or synthetic fertilisers for over forty years, and in the cellar malolactic fermentation only begins once spring brings natural warmth.
