About this wine

Character

A Barbaresco of quiet means: nothing pushes itself forward, and the tension arises from the interplay of tannin, acidity, fruit and bitter notes. The fruit is a vehicle, while the deep spiciness and an earthy quality that reveals its origin carry the wine.

Terroir and origin

Sottimano only acquired the three hectares of the Basarin cru in Neive in 2014, converting it straight to organic and biodynamic farming. The vines are around 50 years old, with an average yield of 40 hl/ha. The estate is now run by Andrea, Elena and Claudia Sottimano; it has been farmed without herbicides or synthetic fertilisers for over forty years.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Nebbiolo, destemmed and left on the skins for up to 60 days, spontaneously fermented in open stainless-steel vats, where the cap was regularly punched down. Since 2020 the wines have aged in large, slightly tapered botti; here for around 24 months. Bottled without filtration or fining.

On the palate

The nose opens with sour cherry, cassis, elderberry and raspberry, followed by juniper, black pepper, allspice and cubeb pepper, along with rosehip tea, cranberry, dried fig, fine toasted notes, cold smoke and forest floor, as well as dried herbs such as marjoram, tarragon and savory. On the palate it is juicy and lively, carried by pronounced, well-integrated acidity, with tannin lending stability and a mouthfeel that stays silky throughout. Juniper, allspice and dried herbs dominate the finish.

Food pairings

Braised leg of lamb with fresh peas and rosemary potatoes, seared duck breast with beetroot and horseradish sauce or cassoulet of beans, bacon and pointed cabbage.

Special features

14.5% ABV, dry. Malolactic fermentation is never forced: it begins once the cellar warms naturally in spring and can sometimes run into autumn. In vintages that call for it, the estate declassifies the Basarin grapes to Langhe Nebbiolo.
