About this wine
Character
A Weissburgunder from the 1987 vintage, released from Nikolaihof's archive only in 2024. Dry, light-footed at 11.5% ABV, clearly defined rather than tired after 37 years. Here, time is no accident, but a way of working.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the village area of Baumgarten, cadastral municipality of Mautern, within the Schlossberg site. The winery itself stands on the foundations of the Roman fort of Favianis, dating to 63 BC. The Saahs family has run Nikolaihof since 1894, farming the 22 hectares biodynamically to Demeter standards since 1971. Wild herbs grow between the vines, and emerald lizards bask on the stone terraces.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Blanc, called Weissburgunder in Austria. In the Roman vaulted cellar, a 350-year-old basket press made of oak beams is still in use, and the musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks. This approach is the source of the moderate alcohol levels and the longevity that have allowed this bottle to endure for nearly four decades.
On the palate
Firmer than its age would suggest. The acidity is well integrated, carrying baked apple, honey and dried herbs over a silky texture. Joined by quince, orange zest and a nutty depth from the long maturation. The finish stays dry, with beeswax and a saline trace.
Distinctive features
Nikolaihof is Austria's oldest winery, was the country's first Demeter-certified estate, and remains the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau. In 2014, the Riesling Vinothek 1995 became the first Austrian wine to score 100 Parker points. This 2024 archive release is correspondingly rare.
