About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that is both serious and sensual, built on depth: dark fruit, spice, pronounced tannin. At 12.5% ABV it stays lean without losing power, and it needs time.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on a west-facing plot within the Premier Cru site Aux Coucherias, just before Bouze-lès-Beaune. The slope is very steep, the soil marked by dark clay and limestone. This clos, isolated by trees and broom, is known at Boris Champy as Clos Montchovet; he has known the vineyard since his time at Louis Jadot. The plot has been farmed biodynamically since 1985.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir from vines planted in the 1950s, trained in Guyot with around 10,000 vines per hectare. Harvest took place in the first three days after 7 September, just before the heat wave. Boris Champy typically ferments around 50 percent whole clusters here and ages the wine for twelve months in barrique.
On the palate
Medium-dense purple. On the nose, stems, mushrooms and a touch of celery, along with spice and brown sugar, followed by ripe dark berries, plums and cherries, with a hint of blackcurrant yogurt that fades quickly with air. The wine feels pure and juicy, with slight extract sweetness and dark fruit that melds with the spice. The tannin is fine-grained and pronounced, joined by piquant, pleasantly bitter notes and a slight salinity.
Distinctive features
Domaine Boris Champy, in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, was in 1984 the first estate in Burgundy to gain Demeter certification and has farmed biodynamically ever since; in 2019 Boris Champy took it over from Didier Montchovet. The label carries the Demeter logo. Bottled in a 1500-millilitre magnum.
