About this wine
Character
A Premier Cru that holds together bright and dark, cool and warm notes. The nose opens slightly animal, with a hint of tar, before shifting quickly to redcurrant and blackcurrant, cherry and raspberry, joined by violet blossom, oak, undergrowth and rosemary.
Terroir and origin
The Vignes Franches vineyard lies in Beaune, just before Pommard and north of Clos des Mouches. There, Boris Champy farms the Clos des Anges: 0.21 hectares, enclosed by a dry stone wall, on very calcareous, stark soil with little topsoil humus. The vines are old and deep-rooted, planted at a density of around 10,000 vines per hectare, trained in Guyot.
Grape variety and vinification
A pure Pinot Noir, harvested in the first three days after 7 September 2023, just before the heatwave. 70% whole clusters fermented in a wooden fermenting vat, then aged for twelve months exclusively in pièces from the Tonnellerie Eric Millard with 50% new oak. 12.5% Vol., dry.
On the palate
Powerful and already juicy, with the intense dark fruit and volume this site delivers. Set against it is a freshness of almost white-wine-like clarity, carried by the higher share of new oak. High complexity paired with easy composure, finesse, gourmandise and a long, fresh finish.
Special features
Domaine Boris Champy in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune became the first estate in Burgundy to be Demeter-certified in 1984 and has farmed biodynamically ever since; in 2019, Boris Champy took over the estate from Didier Montchovet. The Demeter logo appears on the label. Vinification follows a minimal-intervention approach, with spontaneous fermentation by natural yeasts.
