About this wine
Character
A cool, precisely drawn Pinot Noir: bright red fruit, fine spice, no heaviness. At 12.0 % vol., the Altitude stays light and precise, a Burgundy with a clear cool-climate appeal.
Terroir and origin
Two parcels in Nantoux supply the grapes: En Bignon, with clay soil over hard limestone, and Le Clou, with white limestone soil, large pebbles and yellow marl. The vineyards range from 377 metres at Le Clou to 421 metres at Bignon. Boris Champy took over in 2019 the estate founded in 1984 by Didier Montchovet, which today spans twelve hectares.
Grape variety and winemaking
Pure Pinot Noir. The vines are traditionally low and densely planted, 10,000 vines per hectare, pruned in simple and sometimes double guyot. Harvesting is done by hand at optimal ripeness, followed by gentle extraction of 50 % whole clusters in wooden vats. Ageing lasts on average twelve months, 15 % of it in new barrels.
On the palate
The nose opens with undergrowth, cedar and delicate balsamic notes, beneath which lie wild raspberry, red mulberry and sour cherry, framed by allspice and juniper. The entry is crystalline and finely cut, the ruby-red fruit shines, and the fresh acidity carries the wine through to a linear finish.
Food pairings
Eggplant caviar with pomegranate seeds and parsley, grilled mackerel with muhammara, or red-wine-poached veal loin with young vegetables.
Notable features
In 1984, the estate became the first in Burgundy to be Demeter-certified and has farmed biodynamically ever since; the logo appears on the label. Champy previously headed Dominus in California, Louis Latour and Clos des Lambrays before a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago led him to take over the estate. The preparations come from a self-built tisanerie; hedges, stone walls, orchards and sheep define the landscape around Nantoux.
