About this wine
Character
The Santenay Petit Aigle AOP 2020 is a charming, uncomplicated Pinot Noir with dark fruit: black cherry, morello cherry, plum and a touch of sloe, together with herbs, stone and firm dark chocolate. It's not after great depth, but rather drinkability.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from Santenay, the southernmost appellation of the Côte d’Or. For the Petit Aigle négociant series, Boris Champy buys in grapes — here an Ecocert-certified, organically grown Pinot Noir. Champy runs the domaine in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, the first estate in Burgundy to be Demeter-certified, in 1984, and biodynamic ever since.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir. Around 70 percent of the grapes are destemmed, with a portion of whole clusters left in the fermentation vat. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously, extraction stays gentle. The wine then ages ten to twelve months in tonneaux and is bottled without filtration.
On the palate
Silky and juicy, the dark fruit coats the palate. The acidity feels ripe and rounded and threads through the fruit, lending vibrancy. The tannin is already largely resolved, giving the wine roundness, while the oak stays restrained.
Food pairings
With bavette with roasted potatoes and grilled green asparagus, with smoker-cooked spareribs with grilled oranges, and, for a vegetarian option, with roasted potatoes with aioli and pine nut butter.
Special features
At first the wine shows a touch of volatile acidity, which half an hour in the carafe clears up. Petit Aigle is the estate's approachable second label.
