About this wine
Character
The Clou 377 is a finely spiced, juicy Pinot Noir from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune that holds fruit and structure in equal balance. It is crisp and fresh, has backbone, and remains grippy and firm; with air and a little warmth it turns elegant. Dry, 13.0% ABV. Time does it good.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from the Le Clou parcel in Nantoux, situated at 377 metres above sea level. The soil is characterised by white clay with a high proportion of calcareous marl, and the vineyard as a whole is very stony. The altitude delays ripening and preserves natural freshness.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. Parts of the vineyards were already planted in the 1980s with a vine density of over 10,000 vines per hectare, trained in Guyot. Boris Champy destemmed only a small portion of the grapes, with 90% fermented as whole clusters. He extracted gently and aged the wine for twelve months in foudre, 30% of it in new oak.
On the palate
Juice dominates first: cherry, raspberry and strawberry, along with a light aromatic yeasty veil and brioche. The tannin is initially young and slightly drying, but then increasingly merges into a lightly creamy texture. Spicy and firm through to the finish.
Special features
In 1984, Domaine Boris Champy became the first estate in Burgundy to be Demeter-certified and has worked biodynamically ever since; a self-built tisanière supplies the preparations, while hedges, stone walls, orchards and sheep shape the landscape around Nantoux. The label carries the Demeter logo. This bottle is a magnum of 1500 ml.
